First Castleblaney and Frankford history
First Castleblayney Presbyterian Church dates back to 1718
when Lord Blayney, having high regard for the Protestant
Dissenters in his area, assisted financially in providing a
meeting house for them and then asked The Synod of Ulster
to provide them with a minister. Mr Samuel Hemphill was the
first minister and he received a stipend of £20. In 1750
the minister was the Rev. James Gordon. He managed to be at
variance with his congregation, his Presbytery, Lord
Blayney and the widow of his predecessor! As a result a
number of members of his congregation left the church and
built another one a mile out of the town. This became known
as Second Castleblayney or Frankford. Their first minister
was Mr. Hugh McGill.
On November 1st 1929 First Castleblayney and Frankford were
united and subsequently the Rev. James Collins became their
minister. The two churches work well together to this day
sharing Sunday School, Choir and Youth Organisations. They
join together for worship each Sunday using Frankford
building for the first two Sundays of the month and First
Castleblayney building at all other times.
